2016 Year in Review

January 27, 2017

As my term as ‘president’ of the Niagara Falls EDA comes to an end, and I prepare to receive the honourary title of ‘immediate past president’, it is timely to reflect upon this past year and what the federal Conservative movement in Niagara Falls has accomplished.

At our 2016 Annual General Meeting, a team of 26 directors were elected to lead the federal Niagara Falls Conservative Electoral District Association. Throughout the year, we had a great team of hardworking Conservatives who worked together for this great cause! Committee chairs were chosen and everyone worked hard in their respective positions.

Early in the year, regional party organizers called local meetings to receive 2015 campaign feedback from EDAs and election campaign teams. These meetings were purposeful and constructive in reflecting upon and correcting our strategies, tactics, strengths, and weaknesses. We truly appreciated the opportunity to submit grassroots feedback. At these meetings, it was evident that Conservatives from all over are enthusiastic and ready to work to win in 2019.

We sent local riding representatives to the 2016 Conservative Party of Canada Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia, which focused on developing party policy. Our representatives returned enthused about the positive and energetic atmosphere. A new Conservative Party of Canada Council was also elected into office this year. All EDA presidents voted on the slate of those seeking office, for their respective regions. For us, that meant Ontario representatives. In this area, we sought men and women who would work with the party grassroots and local EDAs to keep our party strong and a party of the members.

Throughout the year, our EDA hosted a breakfast, a picnic, and a dinner. Each event was well attended and our hardworking committees demonstrated their talents and abilities to organize fantastic events!   It is team work like this that brings together a strong local representation and the means to build for the future.

On the financial end, we received our election returns and had a successful fundraising dinner featuring our Conservative Member of Parliament, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, and special guest, the Honourable Peter Kent, Conservative Member of Parliament from Thornhill. Additional donations and fundraising efforts brought in solid sums that will go towards our EDA operations in 2017 and beyond, as we prepare for the general election in 2019.

It is indeed a privilege and honour to have served as your president for three years between 2013 and 2016. I especially enjoyed working together as a team with the local EDA, in our beautiful country of Canada, specifically in our scenic riding of Niagara Falls!

We have such great freedoms and opportunities that a large part of the world’s population does not enjoy. We must never take this for granted and we must continue to assure that our freedoms and opportunities continue to be available for our children and grandchildren, and our future generations.

For us in Niagara, the time and efforts put forth are made so much more worthwhile and enjoyable due to our wonderful Conservative Member of Parliament, Rob Nicholson! Rob continues to work hard for us and all Canadians in our nation’s capital. The years that Rob has been our representative in Ottawa, we have enjoyed many benefits across the riding due to his tireless work. Whether it is the farming and wine, tourism, industry or border crossing trade and security, Rob has been there for us.  Thank you for everything you do, Rob!

In closing, many people come to Canada for the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy. Let's work hard and assure that this is not eroded or diluted for future generations. We owe it to our children and grandchildren.

Sincerely,

Jake Sinke
Immediate Past President
